Christmas is a time for relaxation… just as soon as you’ve rounded up all those last-minute festive gifts. This year, why not make it a Christmas morning to remember for that special someone with the gift of a beautiful timepiece? To help you draw up the most important shopping list of the year, we’ve rounded up some classic bestsellers from the likes of Rolex, OMEGA, Breitling, Cartier and Chopard

We couldn’t put together a Christmas luxury watch list without including that most classic of gifts: a Rolex. It’s the season for sparkles and all things shiny, so it’s no surprise that this Rolex Datejust 31 (above, £9,250) is always a firm favourite. Both its 31mm case and elegant Jubilee bracelet are cast in Oystersteel and 18-carat yellow gold, while its silver dial is set with diamonds and 18-carat yellow-gold markers. The Datejust is water-resistant to 100m thanks to Rolex’s Twinlock double waterproofness system, and is powered by Rolex’s automatic COSC-certified 2236 calibre. The new-generation movement integrates Rolex’s silicon Syloxi hairspring, which is insensitive to magnetic fields, impressively stable in the face of temperature variations, and remains up to ten times more precise than traditional hairsprings in the case of shocks. Thanks to its patented geometry, it is also extremely precise in any position. It boasts an approximate power reserve of approximately 55 hours.

Another timepiece celebrated for its defining features is OMEGA’s Constellation Manhattan, and the horology house’s 25mm steel and 18K Sedna™ gold edition with matching bracelet – one of 101 new Constellation models launched in the past year – is guaranteed to delight any woman who favours a more feminine, sparkling style. The timepiece features the iconic ‘claws’ merging seamlessly into the case and bezel, as well as the collection’s small gold Constellation star at 6 o’clock. The Superocean collection was first introduced by Breitling in 1957 for professional and military divers, and was updated earlier this year. The model has become a defining, iconic diver’s watch and, looking at its sturdy and high-performance design, it’s no wonder. The Superocean Automatic 36 (£2,760) is bold, unapologetically sporty and highly versatile. Presented on a practical white rubber strap that complements the pure white dial and bezel, the stainless-steel watch is ready to hit the waves thanks to its unidirectional ratcheted bezel, screw-locked crown and water-resistance to 200m. The COSC-certified piece features Super-LumiNova® numerals, indexes and hands for maximum legibility and is powered by the Breitling 17 calibre, boasting an approximate power reserve of 38 hours. And if you want to give a meaningful gift, this action-packed watch is an especially smart choice given the part it has played in keeping our seas clean – Breitling’s ‘Surfer Squad’ has used the collection to promote ocean and beach clean-ups. Christmas is ultimately a time for celebrating traditions, and Cartier’s 31 x 24mm stainless-steel Tank Solo, presented on a matching bracelet, encapsulates the spirit of times past with its enduringly beautiful design. The quartz-powered dress watch showcases a simple silvered opaline dial and black Roman numerals, while its slightly rounded, rectangular shape makes it instantly recognisable as Cartier. The timepiece also embraces its heritage with the inclusion of Cartier’s famed blue sword-shaped hands and crown set with a blue cabochon. It is priced at £2,340 and is water-resistant to 30m.

Christmas is all about being merry, and perhaps that’s why Chopard’s updated 31 x 29mm stainless-steel Happy Sport (£8,170) is such a popular choice of present. Its new oval-shaped case, introduced at Baselworld this year, still channels the playful design with captivating free-spinning gems that has been charming Chopard’s fans since 1993, when the Happy Sport broke convention by becoming the first watch in history to combine diamonds with a steel case. The diamonds and iridescent mother-of-pearl dial could easily make you forget that the timepiece is ultimately a sports watch offering water-resistance to 30m. Even the flexible ‘pebble’ strap with folding clasp has been designed to exude sophistication and style, staying true to the model’s original design. The wristwatch is powered by the automatic Chopard 09.01-C calibre, which is equipped with a 42-hour power reserve, and can be admired through the case back.
